To celebrate National Water Week and World Water Day, seven local schools around Ballito were invited and sponsored by Siza Water to enjoy a fun morning with the Water Explorer Programme. After a short presentation on how water gets cleaned on route from source to tap, kids from different schools had to work together in groups to ‘clean that water up’ in a water filter competition by planning and implementing as a team.
Learners also cleaned up the beach and learnt about the hazards of plastic on the environment in general and our water bodies in particular. The importance of avoiding plastic where possible and how to contain it in 2 litre bottles to create useful ecobricks was another highlight. Ecobricks can then be used by anyone and especially schools to make seats, tables and even outdoor benches and stairs that need to be covered by a small layer of clay or cement to combat photodegradation. Each school received an ‘Ecobrick starter kit’ with brief instructions, stick and a silicone glue gun to encourage this form of creative waste management at each school.
Teachers commented on the great informative value of the morning while the learners just had a great time learning while doing. Everyone went home with a participation certificate, a colourful Water Explorer badge, a useful Siza Water branded backpack, and a personalised pledge to save water for life.
